Pumping Tests are crucial to understanding more about the hydrogeological properties of the ground, whether it be to aid the design of the construction project, or to aid the design of a dewatering system.
Pumping Tests have formed part of WJ Groups arsenal across our global operations for over 40 years, and we have undertaken them on some of the largest and most complex national infrastructure schemes including HS2 in the UK, Eglinton Crosstown Metro in Canada and Dubai Water Canals in the UAE.
WJ Groundwater Philippines Corp. was therefore pleased to have the opportunity to add to this illustrious list when we partnered with Shimizu-Fujita-Takenaka-EEI JV to undertake extensive pumping tests for CP101 at Quirino Highway Underground Station on the Metro Maila Subway Project.
The purpose of the test was to study to understand the permeability of the sturdy Tuff layer, and therefore a system of 40m deep pumping wells, and 30m deep monitoring wells were installed. After a period of initial background monitoring a step-drawdown test was undertaken initially and followed by a constant rate test. Throughout the test monitoring was undertaken by automated sensors and data loggers to provide high quality, accurate data. This data was analyzed to determine the hydraulic conductivity, transmissivity, and storativity of the tuff layer, crucial for groundwater management, environmental assessments, contamination control, and infrastructure development. This partnership yielded a comprehensive understanding of subsurface conditions, informing sustainable groundwater management decisions in the region.
